Lactobacillus acidophilus is a well researched, colonizing microorganism in the small intestine. It is very acid-resistant and bile tolerant. When taken regularly, L. acidophilus colonizes the intestinal mucosa and the lining of the vagina, cervix, and urethra where it produces lactic and other organic acids inhibiting the adherence and multiplication of pathogenic microbes.
It antagonizes an array of pathogens including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella (common causes of food poisoning), Candida albicans (yeast infections and syndromes), and other pathogens such as Shigella, Clostridium, Listeria, and Helicobacter species. L. acidophilus produces lactase and aids in the digestion and absorption of nutrients.
